I managed a four and a quarter mile walk around Oakwood Cemetery which, as you can see, requires a serpentine route.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQGEtBUUyRKo7akoFq0qpUTSwu_aAJBCbWFhxTHDcxxrfuMzubswExIIFuS8ja05D7kgyA0oiga8AvKo10xuwNXncgD83R3NLULRBRYpwOXQkkLxSZuc_z4pTpu5-AfECUKh0V0LBghUrES6Ex2HcJ2c1TqKSDgSTjO7xcHnIAdN4JDF0vH-xUkVOySsoo/s2173/Screenshot%202024-03-15%20at%208.08.32%E2%80%AFAM.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2173" data-original-width="1284" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQGEtBUUyRKo7akoFq0qpUTSwu_aAJBCbWFhxTHDcxxrfuMzubswExIIFuS8ja05D7kgyA0oiga8AvKo10xuwNXncgD83R3NLULRBRYpwOXQkkLxSZuc_z4pTpu5-AfECUKh0V0LBghUrES6Ex2HcJ2c1TqKSDgSTjO7xcHnIAdN4JDF0vH-xUkVOySsoo/s320/Screenshot%202024-03-15%20at%208.08.32%E2%80%AFAM.jpg" width="189" /></a></div><br /><p>Here are some of the scenes along the way. When I started out shortly after 10:00 AM I needed gloves and a couple of layers. When I got back to the parking lot two hours later the temperature was around 60 degrees and I had shed the gloves and one of the layers.</p><p>I'm pretty settled with the RF 24-105mm f/4L lens as my primary lens with the 16mm and 50mm STM lenses as occasional options. I also have an inexpensive vintage experiment on the way from eBay. One of my Minolta MC lenses from 1970 has a lot of scratches on the exterior elements. I found a related model of the same focal length from about a decade later which is smaller, lighter and supposedly sharper. We shall see. [Update: The MD 200mm f/4 lens has arrived. The lens is nice and worth $50 but it's not something I will use regularly.]</p><p>The gallery for this park can be viewed at <a href="https://trulandphotography.com/schodackisland" target="_blank">https://trulandphotography.com/schodackisland</a>. Here are some shots from this morning.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj19XmWE5QY3nuct3YRS8TzRvjlppTWKUGEVE5LvNBr8QGorUvFAMn212X8hzZiTVn7gWAued7SRg3lusckVQ6UPwRk5Tzz_sb7K9oUClZlkCNLLVEYNVCoLedr0HHfMCJu-o4uW-XT1UxwvbpYIbVOH51mJkU5ryYZ6_Ti2728S1L0dFTAe_mhc3n4pjgq/s1280/0313%20-%201.jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; Buying refurbished lenses from Canon, and then only when they are on sale, is a way of not losing out when you do things like this. If the sale is good enough, you can later trade the lens at MPB for about what you paid for it. Trade in value depends entirely on the condition of the lens regardless of whether you bought it new, refurbished or used. It's sort of like an inexpensive extended rental. I bought my prior copy for $80 and traded it for $80. This one was $100.</p><p>Canon makes only two 50mm prime lenses in their RF mount. This $200 f/1.8 STM lens and the $2,300 f/1.2 USM lens. I had a copy of the EF version of the f/1.2 last summer, which requires an adapter and foregoes some of the benefits of the RF mount, and would love the RF version but it's big, heavy and very expensive so that's unlikely. There are rumors of an RF 50mm f/1.4 lens but until then, the f/1.8 STM lens will have to do. Here is a comparison of the two RF lenses from <a href="https://www.the-digital-picture.com/" target="_blank">The Digital Picture</a>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwofs9gDKq6io24KLE8x8ytAWlomhFP5zfvmadJT3vl79st_47ERuOatODYVaZ0-rhQEoV9SqkY1iulPXMa4JKZQNtIjZ2zPrqq9PDpoh40SvdZeHT9QGezxUHNWptOOXR2Mpx9M7Ix0Bbb_HvCNUhumQE8g8XU2gTUYXjxMIdIBJc2dMQvdo1q5LI5Iun/s528/Canon-RF-50mm-F1.8-STM-Lens-Comparison.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="418" data-original-width="528" height="253" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwofs9gDKq6io24KLE8x8ytAWlomhFP5zfvmadJT3vl79st_47ERuOatODYVaZ0-rhQEoV9SqkY1iulPXMa4JKZQNtIjZ2zPrqq9PDpoh40SvdZeHT9QGezxUHNWptOOXR2Mpx9M7Ix0Bbb_HvCNUhumQE8g8XU2gTUYXjxMIdIBJc2dMQvdo1q5LI5Iun/s320/Canon-RF-50mm-F1.8-STM-Lens-Comparison.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>The f/1.8 lens is not really sharp at wider apertures, especially at the edges, and the quality of the bokeh is harsher than the faster, more expensive lens. There was a day in the mid to upper 60s with wind and sun followed by a day with below freezing temperatures and even colder wind chill all day. </p><p>I got walks in on both of those days and yesterday revisited one of my standard hikes along the Champlain Canalway Trail in Halfmoon. It's an approximately four mile round trip from a parking spot behind a chemical plant up to an old canal lock and back.</p><p>It's not a bad stretch of the trail for wildlife. Yesterday it was all birds with a Kingfisher hanging around and a snowy owl making noise in the distance. The tassled grass is an invasive species, <i><a href="https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/invasive-phragmites/" target="_blank">Phragmites australis</a></i>.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; The edges of the 16mm lens really don't hold up to close scrutiny due to the digital <strike>corrections</strike> stretching needed to fix the distortion inherent in a lens that wide, small and inexpensive. In the right circumstances, though, it can create very nice images and I'll hang on to it.</p><p>I've been going through my bag collection to find a bag that ticks all the boxes with just the R6 and 24-105mm lens and nothing seemed to fit. Everything was either too small to also carry batteries, filters, rocket blower, etc. or too large for long carries.</p><p>Over the weekend, I decided to pick up a used Canon Gadget Bag 300DG from MPB for $25. It fits what I need nicely and is well padded but lightweight. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOsey4vrlUf2Y7740Wv0IRvg0xvV3zFIFPEYxc_gbFxYNQNJuweubfxHw04La2n6rQHYJg5Nz71dTt1WtuOYoPc_9qaxSWxCqMJb09GvxoB3VVVCbheBu-Vlb3bTDMe68oixYszFt5Z_Jgf2OeakblvyEZVtVXutcDStmL7CMEA8F3jfW4HGihsmujZ13V/s1280/0221%20-%201.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; Yesterday I decided to walk around Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve in Clifton Park with only the 16mm lens. </p><p>A lens this wide needs particular elements in the scene for it to be the right tool. Something in the near foreground is one such element. Overhead objects like clouds or trees are another.</p><p>Here are some of the more successful compositions from a cloudless morning.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_OfQxW7_YNcZPNxGchkctPREP651CeTL9Gw3wnXzP4cJz3D7YMxy9G5Kvfh4VfnGDfkiX7r06VFLLLQ4LEFcnLMbwla3qJ12H5CqlV6pCB7xTaXvf8VTVxuDCzh4rajKL-rM74Jwmx62rsVNq56o8Eqe98zs6fs8z82Wsju4yhOpJGy7mODWnfXf7CEr3/s1280/0214%20-%203.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1280" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_OfQxW7_YNcZPNxGchkctPREP651CeTL9Gw3wnXzP4cJz3D7YMxy9G5Kvfh4VfnGDfkiX7r06VFLLLQ4LEFcnLMbwla3qJ12H5CqlV6pCB7xTaXvf8VTVxuDCzh4rajKL-rM74Jwmx62rsVNq56o8Eqe98zs6fs8z82Wsju4yhOpJGy7mODWnfXf7CEr3/s320/0214%20-%203.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioXhxU6FxAFjICr1XrnFWJPaWZ7xJGdWeZlXy_n66cb_aWIGg6ot5YTe-j1N2vMk6Rr68S7ndKgYOtV5e4ydc8E2K1wtyVLSbZGvysL4JURLJjKVqk5de-R3eh935_spDWkvqAhvfXnbCzpL8_o3FNeqq_l1cuRRXK0ST6HTO72DBkTBjF9kfOHFb3-LiU/s1280/0214%20-%204.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1280" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioXhxU6FxAFjICr1XrnFWJPaWZ7xJGdWeZlXy_n66cb_aWIGg6ot5YTe-j1N2vMk6Rr68S7ndKgYOtV5e4ydc8E2K1wtyVLSbZGvysL4JURLJjKVqk5de-R3eh935_spDWkvqAhvfXnbCzpL8_o3FNeqq_l1cuRRXK0ST6HTO72DBkTBjF9kfOHFb3-LiU/s320/0214%20-%204.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNajuV-XyaV1l6_u6yVgzFBs4bdSGAwcvN9fBxF9nUIzGLIYgvpNQ_BZ6rAjFppfFgIaVzg32RiKdBclX25wj1T8jElgpNFVCxNs8hY3ESO4tEt90Q4gnK4Q9lCx_-egWgOfmKjidw25EfDXwyXiaOOllg1OuBuyAR7XjoP6kI_Vb-kdAV5us0Am4X6XGW/s1280/0214%20-%205.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1280" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNajuV-XyaV1l6_u6yVgzFBs4bdSGAwcvN9fBxF9nUIzGLIYgvpNQ_BZ6rAjFppfFgIaVzg32RiKdBclX25wj1T8jElgpNFVCxNs8hY3ESO4tEt90Q4gnK4Q9lCx_-egWgOfmKjidw25EfDXwyXiaOOllg1OuBuyAR7XjoP6kI_Vb-kdAV5us0Am4X6XGW/s320/0214%20-%205.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZfLIYdTOwMQ9VM0u4-0g8TNmO2oTMOQyU-YzWcmCB5mkAqVeDmQJvXucOBWya9eBPUiwKVrs95pKZYA_E7X3pRRcl6LQHli4QcYNY6vUf_yi0I27xYs5oZgemZk4I6UAUSOGJLJ7xdyNKFqVrUOuvcpUoHiqs3Lt9aLeL51R29Kbc8b03Q5Wib_soXkq1/s1280/0214%20-%209.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1280" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZfLIYdTOwMQ9VM0u4-0g8TNmO2oTMOQyU-YzWcmCB5mkAqVeDmQJvXucOBWya9eBPUiwKVrs95pKZYA_E7X3pRRcl6LQHli4QcYNY6vUf_yi0I27xYs5oZgemZk4I6UAUSOGJLJ7xdyNKFqVrUOuvcpUoHiqs3Lt9aLeL51R29Kbc8b03Q5Wib_soXkq1/s320/0214%20-%209.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSuPFrTVdaersUO4FYQyoycqAdj7alBmaJbdDJhAqdz9i-Le3rBKGW8nQcDmcVvmZKoLR6QXydyUcOMrf36eVzCpHEGtR-fy04MWv4tGoKhp7cEMtiRu4eNrF1BIzQWgA_IKX495Gm61IKtwoHhjGR0EtQOgBHFJU32RHm2YxpzJo1Y9bS2YU00mpEea5F/s1280/0214%20-%2010.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1280" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSuPFrTVdaersUO4FYQyoycqAdj7alBmaJbdDJhAqdz9i-Le3rBKGW8nQcDmcVvmZKoLR6QXydyUcOMrf36eVzCpHEGtR-fy04MWv4tGoKhp7cEMtiRu4eNrF1BIzQWgA_IKX495Gm61IKtwoHhjGR0EtQOgBHFJU32RHm2YxpzJo1Y9bS2YU00mpEea5F/s320/0214%20-%2010.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>David Trulandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01521614578656493673noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6692583884997069782.post-9644481680657182852024-02-10T16:53:00.000-05:002024-02-10T16:53:32.104-05:00Robinson State Park in the FogI enjoyed a 24 hour visit to the Springfield, Massachusetts area this weekend. But, I was up against a deadline to return the 85mm lens and thereby avoid having to trade it in at a significant loss. So I did return the lens.</p><p>The option to have only the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens was altered in that I'm keeping the RF 16mm f/2.8 STM lens. Interestingly, the trade in value of the two lenses I am trading in went up a bit since my earlier quote. And I'm getting exactly what I paid for the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens.</p><p>Here are some shots from the past few days with the 28mm pancake lens and the 85mm lens.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD3qMYC2UrcE3-J5DeO4vWXXseyj9CCNoqwR1V3rg43ONFK3BmDOYgNUbSDEMsf0PleDI-c66gTxo5DOT0iDfNtvvVfjlfrO5Ef3wRSvixD_amh_s4nbfGzxmp_qsqy9QiQVKLq2NL5ysc2Dvj1Tn2pS4JDfWAaEoT4i-3t3P-yPtwIh8A5CAKWtuuIa6t/s1280/0117%20-%201.jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1280" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD3qMYC2UrcE3-J5DeO4vWXXseyj9CCNoqwR1V3rg43ONFK3BmDOYgNUbSDEMsf0PleDI-c66gTxo5DOT0iDfNtvvVfjlfrO5Ef3wRSvixD_amh_s4nbfGzxmp_qsqy9QiQVKLq2NL5ysc2Dvj1Tn2pS4JDfWAaEoT4i-3t3P-yPtwIh8A5CAKWtuuIa6t/s320/0117%20-%201.jpeg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Canon EOS R6, RF 28mm f/2.8 STM, f/4, 1/2000 sec., ISO 100</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR-Sl9PW9wRpTibvA5WvSgS9PyWhz8HkjVYv-eN0MuPSxhNm-kUM4PRzQQhaDciuUkflFo0Nh76YIBTxkYnovwpDyjDlylhJ0NIzeHyUJOW6UOTYUZAyhAwWfaDIXoPJGiUrYC5Q4TklS7CjuhKMIrhV_OIjuN8vI76GWWcv209E87A1O27IX_O9mrGa9H/s1280/0117%20-%206.jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1280" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR-Sl9PW9wRpTibvA5WvSgS9PyWhz8HkjVYv-eN0MuPSxhNm-kUM4PRzQQhaDciuUkflFo0Nh76YIBTxkYnovwpDyjDlylhJ0NIzeHyUJOW6UOTYUZAyhAwWfaDIXoPJGiUrYC5Q4TklS7CjuhKMIrhV_OIjuN8vI76GWWcv209E87A1O27IX_O9mrGa9H/s320/0117%20-%206.jpeg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Canon EOS R6, RF 28mm f/2.8 STM, f/5.6, 1/2000 sec., ISO 100</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimNg6Wt_O15mxiwRXGwWEPUvTWl7uVhmN9LiEyXgeoJMF4QJByROMjoknZlBUliym5FwkR7ZiiFbpuINqRG6a9Whep7ncCz-Hw0ujHWDM7pLmyglx-q8Ngw-e2nNiBAAUCQYGfkEgAPAqyOGWPOcd8hJDetScc6faxgEyKmLWsQMFfAlEcix5UBc_8HDTz/s1280/0115%20-%204.jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1280" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimNg6Wt_O15mxiwRXGwWEPUvTWl7uVhmN9LiEyXgeoJMF4QJByROMjoknZlBUliym5FwkR7ZiiFbpuINqRG6a9Whep7ncCz-Hw0ujHWDM7pLmyglx-q8Ngw-e2nNiBAAUCQYGfkEgAPAqyOGWPOcd8hJDetScc6faxgEyKmLWsQMFfAlEcix5UBc_8HDTz/s320/0115%20-%204.jpeg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Canon EOS R6, RF 85mm f/2 IS STM, f/2, 1/3000 sec., ISO 100</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-eq2O8Z85uINciNgamVHWsvHYGEPEIZs6vnZSAYpu188Lv8UE0Sz64hcgzBV8rQIWjanrOnSU-wPRbvTh5LVtHSN1rGh5SMYE9LlO-qS7JzkqCa_6OgoFCnFZS3hqoQJiFS-SmM50aEqOYtyYKr8_TVe4Y1O6NIzlMMog71kz_N8YVO2XG_02kMo1HXrd/s1280/0115%20-%207.jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1280" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-eq2O8Z85uINciNgamVHWsvHYGEPEIZs6vnZSAYpu188Lv8UE0Sz64hcgzBV8rQIWjanrOnSU-wPRbvTh5LVtHSN1rGh5SMYE9LlO-qS7JzkqCa_6OgoFCnFZS3hqoQJiFS-SmM50aEqOYtyYKr8_TVe4Y1O6NIzlMMog71kz_N8YVO2XG_02kMo1HXrd/s320/0115%20-%207.jpeg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Canon EOS R6, RF 85mm f/2 IS STM, f/5.6, 1/250 sec., ISO 100</td></tr></tbody></table><p>Another reason to go with the RF 24-105mm f/4L, one of the original RF lenses from when the EOS R was introduced, is that the HDR software I used to use all the time has a lens correction profile for that lens. Color HDR composites don't work to my liking with files from the EOS R6 for some reason but I do like the monochrome results. </p><p>Here is an example which is from the single normally exposed file of the second scene above. A downside of this particular process, a return and separate trade-ins, is that I ended up paying sales tax on the whole price of the new lens, a difference of about $70.</p><p>And then, despite no email re: shipping or tracking information, the lens shows up on my front porch later in the day.</p>David Trulandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01521614578656493673noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6692583884997069782.post-84693946114195574552024-01-10T09:35:00.000-05:002024-01-10T09:35:16.473-05:002024 Plan In Place<p>The RF 85mm f/2 IS STM lens arrived yesterday and I'm hopefully set with my setup of body, lenses and bags. The holster will fit the body with any of the lenses attached.</p><p>Ideally for my uses, the holster would be a bit larger and the backpack a bit smaller. I decided to take some shots of the old Matton Shipyard, now a part of Peebles Island State Park with my phone camera.</p><p>The iPhone 14 Plus, not Pro, has a main camera with what Apple says is a 12 MP sensor with sensor shift stabilization and a 26mm equivalent, f/1.5 lens. It also has a 12 MP sensor with a 13mm equivalent, f/2.4 lens. While there are apps that let you control aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc., I just let the phone make the decisions since if I want to get into all that I'll use a real camera.</p><p>Here are two shots with the 26mm camera and two shots with the 13mm camera. All are corrected for perspective in DxO PhotoLab which results in some cropping of the original image. The 3:2 aspect ratio image is also cropped to remove some excess foreground snow. The exposure information is from the DxO software and I have no idea if it's accurate.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLij-MV9ZDJ4rZQW3JVFU6GHVsTt686EP0_RgKUuyAK4q9QssJak3_Gy20WxxEOKbv335hdTNHBhpDs4B8A6YTZ5MuPKUckauTY1pek0L8EjXXkV7vAr162bZOlKDlCUW8QFZC4yeu5Usr6Y0PQZFQyZ_GXYTGzcwMg1r3Qc62H9Q4XW4QPFQnfjdgW1zQ/s1280/0108%20-%201.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1280" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLij-MV9ZDJ4rZQW3JVFU6GHVsTt686EP0_RgKUuyAK4q9QssJak3_Gy20WxxEOKbv335hdTNHBhpDs4B8A6YTZ5MuPKUckauTY1pek0L8EjXXkV7vAr162bZOlKDlCUW8QFZC4yeu5Usr6Y0PQZFQyZ_GXYTGzcwMg1r3Qc62H9Q4XW4QPFQnfjdgW1zQ/s320/0108%20-%201.jpeg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">26mm, f/1.5, 1/11,364 sec., ISO 32</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTSkkyktXNyw84w7IKNokkB9jO9A8woempUHIBeJZxwzFTLzXv5RJnJTUEkhkiRw2_WcS2nE33MZAmbpZCOUtBLuYAfi2A8gOsyGyIkNPwZrf2b2YOUd6JNGddtFOODI4yaAwx7nb1girbx-ShK2LZFm3BzzQ_OrLDIVxEQYZuFOibR8Mwxu_QNlxEg6Gl/s1280/0108%20-%202.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="961" data-original-width="1280" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTSkkyktXNyw84w7IKNokkB9jO9A8woempUHIBeJZxwzFTLzXv5RJnJTUEkhkiRw2_WcS2nE33MZAmbpZCOUtBLuYAfi2A8gOsyGyIkNPwZrf2b2YOUd6JNGddtFOODI4yaAwx7nb1girbx-ShK2LZFm3BzzQ_OrLDIVxEQYZuFOibR8Mwxu_QNlxEg6Gl/s320/0108%20-%202.jpeg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">26mm, f/1.5, 1/10,309 sec., ISO 40</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5vUfe9_1h2V3Pe7AEU2RlhFWLQA19oDp9TNSlt5KCEKZv38RiX8mB5YLUc0uOgVrAToHIpWv1_ot8gfvXvINqE8on2I8-jV9X1V-NxgSLEU838br0avbX_wPzkyAB-EMuGyMyRSPn8ekepidECZzvfYKNLnyESsRqp6IZZqvfSq8sVB0y-PeC7xCdC8vE/s1280/0108%20-%203.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1280" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5vUfe9_1h2V3Pe7AEU2RlhFWLQA19oDp9TNSlt5KCEKZv38RiX8mB5YLUc0uOgVrAToHIpWv1_ot8gfvXvINqE8on2I8-jV9X1V-NxgSLEU838br0avbX_wPzkyAB-EMuGyMyRSPn8ekepidECZzvfYKNLnyESsRqp6IZZqvfSq8sVB0y-PeC7xCdC8vE/s320/0108%20-%203.jpeg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">13mm, f/2.4, 1/686 sec., ISO 32</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIycizDxEgmJR02zEp9co4Dedb7k9UnLMqcdab0R3kmBHDQ8DvAEOUyc3nTjEMS8vXmnVkHxtTGVvY6qVlp1XmCj7IPE24NX3SoKC_Vq-zY1ndf1izncf91zh42vKWthjUfhFWHybqwFE6jK9SIve8UncyLRvDiWcOlSFT3ybtz0e1gnYbJN_W3BFmmy6H/s1280/0108%20-%204.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="961" data-original-width="1280" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIycizDxEgmJR02zEp9co4Dedb7k9UnLMqcdab0R3kmBHDQ8DvAEOUyc3nTjEMS8vXmnVkHxtTGVvY6qVlp1XmCj7IPE24NX3SoKC_Vq-zY1ndf1izncf91zh42vKWthjUfhFWHybqwFE6jK9SIve8UncyLRvDiWcOlSFT3ybtz0e1gnYbJN_W3BFmmy6H/s320/0108%20-%204.jpeg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">13mm, f/2.4, 1/1,033 sec., ISO 32</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>David Trulandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01521614578656493673noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6692583884997069782.post-15358182824639438782024-01-01T13:15:00.007-05:002024-01-03T07:40:18.165-05:00Plans For 2024<p>I think 2024 may be the year that I drastically alter my online presence. I have become very disappointed with Zenfolio, the host for trulandphotography.com. It is very slow and they introduced a feature that archives inactive galleries so that it takes days to access those photos. My twelve image 2019 wall calendar gallery, for instance, has been in the process of restoring for about a week now.</p><p>Some blog features, such as the article archive function which allows viewing older articles, just stopped working. I can't offer prints at base lab prices as Zenfolio adds its own fees on top of the subscription cost, which I would have to pay.</p><p>My yearly subscription ends at the beginning of June and I'll be looking for a downsized alternative between now and then. I will probably keep the domain name and switch it to whatever else I end up using, even if that is only this blog. </p><p>I start the year with a slightly downsized kit having sold my RF 85mm f/2 IS STM lens in my last MPB transaction. Further downsizing is unlikely as I don't have a lot left. Of my one body and four lenses, none are redundant. About the only swap I can think of is to exchange the RF 24-240mm variable aperture lens for the RF 24-105mm f/4L lens which loses a small amount of weight and size and adds weather sealing, better image quality and 8 versus 6.5 stops of image stabilization but at the cost of half the focal length range. The other possibility would be to rely solely on whichever zoom lens I have and get rid of the RF prime STM lenses. This would only happen if I switched to the 24-105mm f/4 lens.</p><p>While this is unlikely, you never know. Here are some comparison photos from <a href="https://www.the-digital-picture.com/" target="_blank">The Digital Picture</a> showing the two lenses.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOUiBaUy2gQDkk97FtNf6KrRlt65J4o5l26H9honRJ_bKROJW-VO-puVMUQicZV5BMeOe26igFXR7A5nI4Y_fYmcYESmH9i6I_o69-HgPBg9keb8WzGJei4cciWz8P6UcypLhXodhfRvGBxixKEP6Xz_O7sBoP3juXmzxvedMzkCr__sjOqacofbQ7TLeV/s448/Comp%20-%201.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="448" data-original-width="383" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOUiBaUy2gQDkk97FtNf6KrRlt65J4o5l26H9honRJ_bKROJW-VO-puVMUQicZV5BMeOe26igFXR7A5nI4Y_fYmcYESmH9i6I_o69-HgPBg9keb8WzGJei4cciWz8P6UcypLhXodhfRvGBxixKEP6Xz_O7sBoP3juXmzxvedMzkCr__sjOqacofbQ7TLeV/s320/Comp%20-%201.jpeg" width="274" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqkbNSJFJq5sjuig8bzhgFiRnW2MdOFayQryz-w_BdLBT3gwnU3R2zhKw_ulD8LpCeejJH9o0FLm1mbfvU_a_jA0IEJQIzRFyOBRWDO48PrXSCleb-fiW9TFsinh5wKL4m_WUVCd6bw6DqOs1ODcPwpu5MRvgYJM-Bq0tN84sh1aLZbqsUULSfEb7N7VFw/s650/Comp%20-%202.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="650" data-original-width="388" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqkbNSJFJq5sjuig8bzhgFiRnW2MdOFayQryz-w_BdLBT3gwnU3R2zhKw_ulD8LpCeejJH9o0FLm1mbfvU_a_jA0IEJQIzRFyOBRWDO48PrXSCleb-fiW9TFsinh5wKL4m_WUVCd6bw6DqOs1ODcPwpu5MRvgYJM-Bq0tN84sh1aLZbqsUULSfEb7N7VFw/s320/Comp%20-%202.jpeg" width="191" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>UPDATE: As frequently happens, the act of writing about something makes that something, or something else, happen. On this occasion, I took the 24-240mm lens out and mentally compared its features with the 24-105mm lens. Afterwards, I decided that trading all my lenses and a backpack for the 24-105mm L lens didn't make much sense and I would still have to kick in almost $100. </p><p>Instead, I decided to trade in the 24-240mm lens and the backpack and add the RF 85mm f/2 IS STM lens, a lens I've owned up until recently, to my 16mm, 28mm and 50mm STM lenses. </p><p>The 85mm lens gets 8 stops of image stabilization with my EOS R6, the same as the 24-105mm f/4 lens and is two stops faster and focuses to half life size. And I will get almost $200 back in the deal. </p><p>I will lose the 86mm to 240mm focal lengths but will have a more capable setup, as long as lens changes are feasible. </p><p>I had this same exact setup back in <a href="https://trulandphoto.blogspot.com/2023/09/the-rf-stm-lens-quartet-is-complete.html" target="_blank">September</a> but then added the 24-105mm STM and the cheap 100-400mm lenses, then the 24-240mm lens to replace them both, then sold the 85mm lens because I wasn't using it as both it and the 24-240mm lens are weighty.</p>David Trulandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01521614578656493673noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6692583884997069782.post-56939455437488227752023-12-21T07:02:00.002-05:002023-12-21T16:27:53.821-05:00December Adjustments<p>The only gear change since my last entry here is that I traded in my RF 85mm f/2 IS STM lens for cash. I did get the 24mm and 35mm versions of the lens on the Black Friday refurbished sale from Canon, and used them once, but found that six prime lenses and the 24-240mm zoom lens was too much for a single camera body. </p><p>I could have returned the two new lenses but the sale was so good that by including the 85mm lens and a backpack I was no longer using, I received significantly more from MPB than just the return credit. The trade-in process with MPB is also infinitely simpler than returning something to Canon.</p><p>I now use a couple of Case Logic Kontrast series bags with the prime lenses and a small flash in one bag and the 24-240mm lens in a holster. The camera body can be attached to a lens in either bag although it normally is in the holster with the zoom lens. Here are the two bags.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL_HWjHQs8rV6VG2uTlujeO_UVeGVSTyo7D2lka9ckojeY_CNqgoucP7efDra2T47F_yTqMJuAPbUXRnxP3gbnWcY7Le56tcrgU6f-eW0ZAU-fmYZuBxTQSG74RHwFMNhivZrOeggKHKkRnbDGVbfVLBYm8eHKc_d8-OhQGfsnFNxP3cfhjfWA5QnDqhQr/s1000/CLDSLR1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="911" data-original-width="1000" height="292" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL_HWjHQs8rV6VG2uTlujeO_UVeGVSTyo7D2lka9ckojeY_CNqgoucP7efDra2T47F_yTqMJuAPbUXRnxP3gbnWcY7Le56tcrgU6f-eW0ZAU-fmYZuBxTQSG74RHwFMNhivZrOeggKHKkRnbDGVbfVLBYm8eHKc_d8-OhQGfsnFNxP3cfhjfWA5QnDqhQr/s320/CLDSLR1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSMr6_yfmnwQCRagLe7Y-JYVvZM8apYrGJ3ChbuGJsNWyIvQDj5gp9tWgknxVOtg7sC_xqd9zCD3yWigoVKvDgpFASPJNbjKkg8X3cHLAjZNsRgSGFrzqIJvYjQbYWvUCY0HDw6K3JC_FVD3PNMNUkXr7h4P4EY4DnSi5qLj8vpungI8-cz2QUaruKJDJM/s1000/CLDSLR2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="809" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSMr6_yfmnwQCRagLe7Y-JYVvZM8apYrGJ3ChbuGJsNWyIvQDj5gp9tWgknxVOtg7sC_xqd9zCD3yWigoVKvDgpFASPJNbjKkg8X3cHLAjZNsRgSGFrzqIJvYjQbYWvUCY0HDw6K3JC_FVD3PNMNUkXr7h4P4EY4DnSi5qLj8vpungI8-cz2QUaruKJDJM/s320/CLDSLR2.jpg" width="259" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZapYY7O6vOw_NVwE9qToXBlvA2RsM4rrP0eMZm2djWk3-EypS50klV7b2fZHL13F2AWjsbdCtuluGCNVr9ldlkE8JCJ14R7CD_o4Bf5roLNt5CPXnmKnF3lCQqbsAIA__dn7MdOGZ_51kFz9OH-oEHsnfD0XyCJRNvhMuHMtzoluug0pbOFet5_dCAL3o/s1000/CLH1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="820" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZapYY7O6vOw_NVwE9qToXBlvA2RsM4rrP0eMZm2djWk3-EypS50klV7b2fZHL13F2AWjsbdCtuluGCNVr9ldlkE8JCJ14R7CD_o4Bf5roLNt5CPXnmKnF3lCQqbsAIA__dn7MdOGZ_51kFz9OH-oEHsnfD0XyCJRNvhMuHMtzoluug0pbOFet5_dCAL3o/s320/CLH1.jpg" width="262" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiHI97dpg_Sw50qYaQFqlvZFzM1xDlHn_KXQDbfUjGyZYmiQ6NilqZdLF5spz4BKiYj779HgV6oI-UXEX3P3mcH3RLnYT11x113I5mH8aP3pyImIqZu3S5r7wXWvnasjlCmCP0ROVDDRUwA7jwV-DQKZa5_5TvkOfXCWtlklUy1eZ1cwfwWNOivrOgyMe9/s1000/CLH2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="662" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiHI97dpg_Sw50qYaQFqlvZFzM1xDlHn_KXQDbfUjGyZYmiQ6NilqZdLF5spz4BKiYj779HgV6oI-UXEX3P3mcH3RLnYT11x113I5mH8aP3pyImIqZu3S5r7wXWvnasjlCmCP0ROVDDRUwA7jwV-DQKZa5_5TvkOfXCWtlklUy1eZ1cwfwWNOivrOgyMe9/s320/CLH2.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><br /><p>The Case Logic Kontrast series is discontinued and I am actively looking for the Kontrast backpack which would hold all the gear and be useful for longer hikes. Gone are the RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM and RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM lenses. Arriving is the RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM lens, a lens I have previously owned but sold when the software it requires for lens corrections no longer worked on my MacBook Air.</p><p>Although I lost money on the 100-400mm lens by missing the return deadline at Best Buy by a couple of weeks, by including my EF to RF adapter and a Think Tank bag in the sale to MPB it was not so bad. I had purchased the 24-105mm lens used from lens rentals and I actually received more than I paid for it. The 24-240mm lens is a refurbished lens purchased directly from Canon. It was manufactured in July of this year.</p><p>I have had the lens for a while now and it remains on the EOS R6 except for when I want a very small setup, more light gathering ability or a shallow depth of field. Here are samples of the focal length extremes of the same scene followed by a couple of intermediate focal length samples and a shot of the gear in the bag. This bag setup weighs 13.8 pounds.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC06OiMDFedsN2-wyDdCD3EQKl6pdYcz1ZwvbW4ckpZtyGdyl9_Z1Z2k2MnmfmgZ3ohXN06EkhQHgWKm0WpKPKrfr63ZcHP__dPub_h_ct7B7V43w55TVSzX50SKdGRJ-eBfDfg0M9bUg9Wo5J4QcoyRTE1up92mxiwhLyUNJyABcrNzvVAlU1HHhJE6H1/s1280/1110%20-%201.jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; I have until October 24th to return it should I so choose. At this point I think I will hang on to it.</p><p>It's a value lens for sure but it does the job when I want something longer than 105mm. Diffraction doesn't start to soften images until past f/11with my 20MP EOS R6 body and it's diffraction limiting aperture of f/10.6. I'm not sure how I would like using the lens with the EOS R7 body and it's diffraction limiting aperture of f/5.2.</p><p>Here are some images with the lens from Maine along with the current bag setup in the Think Tank Photo Streetwalker, which weighs about 11 pounds with this gear, and the RF lens lineup.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhytE16BmGX96M8wOQGbERMpgW7sCZw7XU68qFCBNW1PYMMwXNEt6s8eaMo9Z9tgdHpViHi0oqmClEwvBeRclkcCQkUClycPzM8_RoDlf2NnunHz-4L74w2Oz0bVJH53EWu_SYclKXtP143tDvLD80Q0Z7XCu_03WD7IOqquxp122-YlaBhgFHfezJs6n7q/s1280/zoom%20-%201.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1280" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhytE16BmGX96M8wOQGbERMpgW7sCZw7XU68qFCBNW1PYMMwXNEt6s8eaMo9Z9tgdHpViHi0oqmClEwvBeRclkcCQkUClycPzM8_RoDlf2NnunHz-4L74w2Oz0bVJH53EWu_SYclKXtP143tDvLD80Q0Z7XCu_03WD7IOqquxp122-YlaBhgFHfezJs6n7q/s320/zoom%20-%201.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7tluFU2RNduKtIwQ16WOQjPIuFI1bj2kPiUPceiz0cLCmFDpVBhzeZRJWWohrdu6KjlL03U_G9dVAhTKGIDAImQr0uTyMM_G3CBSAt5UFCIJ165IhhcFfxRgFLO0FnjKiheTz-r81wR_9nQj3KXDWh4iryZnJ-k3tZinQWh4o1rTdAVDn2rvDvPg4E0iv/s1280/zoom%20-%202.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1280" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7tluFU2RNduKtIwQ16WOQjPIuFI1bj2kPiUPceiz0cLCmFDpVBhzeZRJWWohrdu6KjlL03U_G9dVAhTKGIDAImQr0uTyMM_G3CBSAt5UFCIJ165IhhcFfxRgFLO0FnjKiheTz-r81wR_9nQj3KXDWh4iryZnJ-k3tZinQWh4o1rTdAVDn2rvDvPg4E0iv/s320/zoom%20-%202.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwwNB0T3fF5tpal0eulrxB3usOIx0GyYH3SMaJZGEXtDDAft9tDHR47W2JYMY8g99iud_UpHoD5nMuFJGd76wUbRcWM34aDRhwZB3a0DZPlNifcTJWIDY3mdY2QA4a9u2FIZ5qd6YnECXUp2bdDDGUzDcSGY2pi3xEafsd2rGlMBobrRy7C7KJO_G1Vp8g/s1280/zoom%20-%203.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1280" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwwNB0T3fF5tpal0eulrxB3usOIx0GyYH3SMaJZGEXtDDAft9tDHR47W2JYMY8g99iud_UpHoD5nMuFJGd76wUbRcWM34aDRhwZB3a0DZPlNifcTJWIDY3mdY2QA4a9u2FIZ5qd6YnECXUp2bdDDGUzDcSGY2pi3xEafsd2rGlMBobrRy7C7KJO_G1Vp8g/s320/zoom%20-%203.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX1RAeROkEd5kp7_yYKC2y4viptd5g6752HitG5uBE0cS0cGwWoBzw23XVMhI91rlwexkOEXLeKPwY4d1XrH_fNpkf5MZ-VRVyYBODe16hPo8sjPDMgTyniOJiZ7whqclPjJfPRAuVEVOmH9KUjUZsz-WStM0sCQGLScxAE9typRilC39VLb8p8sxIOVXY/s1280/2310%20-%201.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="889" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX1RAeROkEd5kp7_yYKC2y4viptd5g6752HitG5uBE0cS0cGwWoBzw23XVMhI91rlwexkOEXLeKPwY4d1XrH_fNpkf5MZ-VRVyYBODe16hPo8sjPDMgTyniOJiZ7whqclPjJfPRAuVEVOmH9KUjUZsz-WStM0sCQGLScxAE9typRilC39VLb8p8sxIOVXY/s320/2310%20-%201.jpeg" width="222" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeaGECsTv3hm4Vkv2Fd4gaNCt1x9OKv3s2g6ePIhRotAH_fWLUzpM0aAOggVolj50Wm7CFluPp2uU8YJU-CVd6n7i-6RDlWiESWW7F7-gbIPTe4o7nCOQ_MC12AZ8tX5dIw98YO5mgmTRz64SzAPRgSk2p0-25AMHmE3vkEYIqouN_RUbqSDlM7kGO6sa4/s1280/2310%20-%202.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1280" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeaGECsTv3hm4Vkv2Fd4gaNCt1x9OKv3s2g6ePIhRotAH_fWLUzpM0aAOggVolj50Wm7CFluPp2uU8YJU-CVd6n7i-6RDlWiESWW7F7-gbIPTe4o7nCOQ_MC12AZ8tX5dIw98YO5mgmTRz64SzAPRgSk2p0-25AMHmE3vkEYIqouN_RUbqSDlM7kGO6sa4/s320/2310%20-%202.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>David Trulandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01521614578656493673noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6692583884997069782.post-87978876021738833262023-09-27T06:40:00.002-04:002023-09-28T06:57:27.916-04:00A Really Cheap, Versatile Lens<p>If you look at the photo of the new backpack in my last post, you'll notice that a central compartment is being taken up by a lens hood which is usually on the 85mm lens. Nature abhors an empty bag compartment.</p><p>I was checking prices on a cheap, Canon kit lens, the RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM, and ran across an offer to good to be refused. This lens has a NSRP of $399, Canon sells refurbished copies for $320, MPB sells like new copies for $240 and for some reason, Lens Rentals is selling like new former rentals (10 rentals max) for $140.</p><p>The lens costs $18 for a 7 day rental along with $25 shipping. It could be that hardly anyone rents a lens they can afford to buy and which costs less to rent than the shipping. I don't know how many they have available but it is still listed after I bought mine.</p><p>The lens has some interesting features like close focusing to .4X and 7 stops of image stabilization with my EOS R6. The image quality is also pretty good. Here is a sample at 105mm and f/8 processed with DxO Photolab 6 which you can click to zoom in on beyond 100%.</p><p>The empty compartment is now filled.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZOLY7ARJxxPPdPx9cR3WY83bvgK45rhBNaTC6CVM8iBrai8eUkMLJ9B9wfGVGnuQi_jaxFnIfuAsXiYOcwuvm_p73BnP1Sm5W_LcY3UaiGheduyzKz9MlYY6v6mi5Je-fzzlB4Pn3-a6Ncqm7dVPbPr3Lrq3RHNo1ikF-U7yQRKBuoYP0XottqdxYW29g/s4864/IMG_2924.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3648" data-original-width="4864" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZOLY7ARJxxPPdPx9cR3WY83bvgK45rhBNaTC6CVM8iBrai8eUkMLJ9B9wfGVGnuQi_jaxFnIfuAsXiYOcwuvm_p73BnP1Sm5W_LcY3UaiGheduyzKz9MlYY6v6mi5Je-fzzlB4Pn3-a6Ncqm7dVPbPr3Lrq3RHNo1ikF-U7yQRKBuoYP0XottqdxYW29g/s320/IMG_2924.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>David Trulandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01521614578656493673noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6692583884997069782.post-44613255826639432902023-09-20T13:28:00.001-04:002023-09-21T15:33:29.599-04:00A New Backpack<p>Unfortunately, a whole new set of lenses usually requires a different bag. After trying different ways to use the bags I already have, I decided to take advantage of a sale to pick up a Lowepro Flipside BP 300AW III backpack.</p><p>The biggest issue was the new lenses are much smaller in both diameter and length than my previous lenses and the bags ended up being much larger than necessary. Unless I filled in spaces with things I didn't really need to carry around like flashes and tripods.</p><p>This backpack only weighs a little over 8 pounds with the gear and opens from the front of the backpack, which is up against your body when carrying. This lets you put the bag down on the ground to access the gear without getting the part that's against you wet and dirty.</p><p>Here is a shot of the gear in the bag. You can read a review of the bag at <a href="https://amateurphotographer.com/review/lowepro-flipside-bp-300-aw-iii-review/" target="_blank">https://amateurphotographer.com/review/lowepro-flipside-bp-300-aw-iii-review/</a>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqIMCguhu4W14QirijLxLuQACAwPqe_zCyb1WHIpyWNGuU5MHbYdxr2cnAHZbUkD8LuAaAahZV8ay6nslHWEIzDRQhX8yvtxRCAPcEnl2wSs72LV91S7bm3Smcg6Nx7LXy_p1Ne1nTBki_bcOHTy8A5PmXrjlvYWCfkqfu-Ae7EqHYmnowj-epcarSkld3/s1280/IMG_1141.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="854" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqIMCguhu4W14QirijLxLuQACAwPqe_zCyb1WHIpyWNGuU5MHbYdxr2cnAHZbUkD8LuAaAahZV8ay6nslHWEIzDRQhX8yvtxRCAPcEnl2wSs72LV91S7bm3Smcg6Nx7LXy_p1Ne1nTBki_bcOHTy8A5PmXrjlvYWCfkqfu-Ae7EqHYmnowj-epcarSkld3/s320/IMG_1141.jpeg" width="214" /></a></div><div><br /></div><p><br /></p>David Trulandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01521614578656493673noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6692583884997069782.post-56723190531360225292023-09-14T13:06:00.008-04:002023-09-15T06:37:05.931-04:00The RF STM Lens Quartet is Complete<p>I received the RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM lens yesterday and tested it out this morning.
